What is it like getting married in Mexico ? Are there a lot of special requirements? Will it be hard to find a place to get married, someone to marry you, a decent wedding cake? You are probably wondering a lot of these questions and more...

Legal ceremonies in Mexico have the following requirements:

  • Valid passports for the couple and four (4) witnesses. This is the only type of identification that is accepted.
  • Tourist visa for the couple and four (4) witnesses. This will be given to any foreigner upon entering Mexico.
  • Blood test results from a blood test done in Mexico. The test can be done at any local clinic. The results will be ready within 24 hours and the paperwork does not have to be translated. These tests cost about $40 USD per person.
  • A marriage license and ceremony performed by a Mexican justice.
  • A visit to the office of the justice performing the ceremony a few days in advance to sign papers.

But beyond the legality, what other things should you know about getting married in Mexico?

Well, even though the Mayan Riviera has many modern amenities, there are still some things that will always be uniquely Mexican and that you should keep in mind when planning your wedding.

For instance, you can get state of the art photography and videography for your wedding. But if you want a rock and roll band for your wedding reception, you might want to reconsider. Instead, consider a world-class mariachi band and a good DJ to make any wedding party dance all night.

There are many venues to choose from in the Yucatan...from fancy modern hotels (especially now that they are being rebuilt after Hurricane Wilma) to palapa huts on the beach. Getting married in Mexico, especially this part of Mexico, just means you have more choices.

When it comes to your wedding dinner, the fact that you are in Mexico, and specifically the Yucatan, means that you will be able to serve your guests a lot of delicious fresh tropical fruits and Mexican food. Fresh seafood and exotic tropical drinks, as well as champagne, can all be included. The Mayan Riviera has an amazing selection of restaurants to choose from, but they aren't all necessarily within reach of the deserted beach with the palapa hut.

In general, we think its important to remember that you are in a foreign country when you come here, and not everything you are used to back home will be available... but you'll also have access to some things you cannot get (or afford) back home. So when you are planning your wedding in Mexico, let us help you take advantage of the opportunity to create a totally unique and special event for you and your loved ones.

Find the Right Spot...
One advantage of coming to the Mayan Riviera is that there are so many lovely places to choose from. Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and many other places along the coast are home to hotels ranging from rustic to elegant. And many of these hotels are happy to host a wedding ceremony. Let Paradise Weddings help you locate the perfect location for your dream wedding.

  • Here are some of the types of venues you have to choose from:
  • A glamourous indoor ballroom with sparkling chandelier
  • A poolside patio with a view of the ocean
  • A group of palapa-style huts on an (almost) deserted white sandy beach
  • A rustic restaurant with tiki torches and swaying palm trees
  • A sleek modern indoor restaurant with a patio under the stars

Whatever your dream, we'll help you fulfill it. But contact us well ahead of your wedding date to reserve the place of your choice.
